Active Ageing Academy initiated by Fei Yue Community Services has created Singapore first double certification programme (Mandarin) for seniors who wish to attain basic counseling skills and knowledge of third age wellness at one go. The 6-month programme provides full spectrum of training in social and human development skills with the aim to keep seniors active and in turn, be active contributors to their families and communities. Active Ageing Academy was officially launched by Mr Lim Boon Heng, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office on 31st May 2008. The Mandarin programme evokes overwhelming response (300 over enquiries within 2 weeks after the launch) from seniors of all parts of Singapore. The rationale of the project is to create a mindset change among seniors to combat ageism and to promote a more active and vibrant senior citizenry. The programme also encourages seniors/retirees to become para-counsellors (Community Ambassadors) for the community. They supplement the work of counsellors and significantly extend the "safety net".
